GO TO FARMERS MARKET Link DESIGN FOR SPORT. You are what you eat. You get the body shape you train for. Both statements are true but the truth can sometimes be masked. I have a friend who can run a full marathon in a very good time but can't walk any distance. Another friend who is a nurse, I asked her why this is. She gave me a long winded and very technical answer which passed over my head. It boiled down to the fact that you use different muscles for different purposes. If you want to lift big weights you need a big body. If you want to throw big bodies about then you need an even bigger body a good example being a Sumo Wrestler. For prolonged periods of physical activity you need a good set of lungs and a big heart otherwise the demands you make will cause your body to simply run out of steam. An explosive burst of energy is one thing but a steady and prolonged effort requires something else. The one good thing about your body is that if you continue to train for a particular sport all the essential muscles and other bits required will begin to get into condition for that sport. In days past there were sportsmen called, "A good all rounder." Today's sportsmen can't really be good at everything they must specialise and train hard at that sport in order to move up through the rank structure. You start at the bottom of the heap and work at it and claw your way up by sheer physical effort and determination. It helps a lot if you love your sport and the companionship of others in the same sport. . The sportsmen of 50 years ago would find it very difficult to get a ranking against today's competitors. In my own sport of archery we forced up the record scores by more than 50 points in most rounds because we enjoyed the sport and the good craic between friends. . One day I had my bow in work when the strongest man in Ireland walked into my office. This chap Jack Shanks lifted the Dinnie Stones and carried them, a really amazing feat of strength. To see what I am talking about take a look at big "Sam McMahon Loon Mountain Stone Carry", copy and Google the words within the quotes. He picked up my bow but could only draw the string a few inches then he got stuck. He was very surprised when he saw me pulling it back apparently without effort.. There is a picture of Jack Shanks lifting the Dinnie stones at :-http://gordondinnie.com/Lifts.html As I said you get the body you train for, he could lift and carry massive stones, I simply pull taut strings. Most people are capable of walking a good distance, that distance is dependant upon the general condition of your body. If you have spent a long time watching television and have taken little exercise then the distance you can walk comfortably is reduced. However if there is nothing wrong with your joints and your arteries are not clogged then there is hope for you regardless how fat and unfit you are now. Age is not a barrier so get up on your feet and begin to do something.
Getting fit again is like planting a seed which will grow into something big. Start off small and gently, each day you
will become that little bit stronger and have more energy and staying power. If you are getting on in years, don't
worry, everyone can make some improvement to themselves. Improvement takes longer the older you are but you
will improve if you make the effort. The only thing I would caution you about is over exertion, don't push yourself
too hard, but you should do something. If you can find a friend to go walking with it makes training that bit easier,
safer and much more enjoyable. Check out the Walking Pages of St MARY'S WALKING GROUP it will tell you how to start walking and is also crammed full of useful facts. |
