  • This will be updated about once per month.
  • As an experiment I have classified a couple of archers based on their scores.
  • If you don't like this idea I will take it off again.
  • Classification is based on the Mulligan system from Field News No 45 0ct 2006.

There is a discussion on this subject on the News page.

You need MS Excel to view this.
  •  Please check that you fill your score sheet in correctly. A serious mistake occurred recently which could have led to disqualification.
It is imperative that you enter your bow style and clearly indicate the peg you have shot from.
It is the individual archer who is responsible for the accuracy of the details on the score sheet not the person keeping score.

A very well laid out course amid beautiful parkland on the estate of Lord Dunleath at Ballywalter. The sun shone all day and the temperature shot up and stayed up all day. John Rainey laid out the course which was challenging with a few new shots including a cracker over a second lake we discovered within the grounds. A lot of people were intimidated by this new shot even though it was not difficult or even a long shot it was all in the mind of the archer. One chap who shall remain nameless added 20 yards to the shot and placed his arrow up in the antlers. Naturally I got the flack for this ..... who cares .... I always enjoy someone else missing, especially him. The course was easy underfoot, all of the overshoots were safe and the paths between the targets were clearly marked and easy to follow. John obviously made good use of the space available to him and every shot was an apparent challenge even though the course was exactly within specifications as per the rules. Andrew Sneddon in the boys u18 Compound Barebow section scored a massive 365 which smashed the current British record by over 100 points.

    Stamp Round Un - marked
    GILFORD CASTLE

    Hosted By Banbridge

    on Sunday 6th May 2006.
The weather was dry but threatened to rain at any moment. The temperature was mild to slightly warm and the wind was very gentle.
This was a brilliantly set course well up to the standards laid down by Don Stamp. I feel that we still honour this Grand Old Gentleman of archery even though his fellow Englishmen have swept him into history. It was good to be tested in the old way. None of this three arrows from the one peg malarkey that FITA has imposed upon us. In a Stamp round every arrow is shot from a different place and requires the archer to find a shooting solution from that position. I for one, totally enjoyed the days shooting and I hope this becomes a traditional event for many years to come.

BALLYWALTER VENUE FOR N.I. OPEN FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Ballywalter Park was a hive of activity last weekend when Lough Cuan Bowmen hosted the 32nd annual Northern Ireland Open Field Championships by kind permission of Lord Dunleath. With the rhododendrons in bloom and the birds singing supported by the mild, dry and mostly overcast weather the venue was idyllic. So much so that no fewer than 21 new N.I. records set over the weekend of which 8 were also new All British records. Records can be set for the 24 target course and also for 48 targets over two days.

The International FITA Mixed course of 24 targets, set by Lough Cuan’s John Reaney, ranged in size from 20cm to 80cm in diameter and were shot on the Saturday and again on the Sunday. Each archer had to shoot three arrows at each target from between 5 to 60 meters. Half the distances to each target, were marked so were known to the archer while the remainder, set within a prescribed range, were not made known, marked and unmarked in a random mixture. As this was a Record Status shoot the International Judge in charge was, from Dublin, Tony McLaughlin assisted by Ballyvally’s Frank Mulligan.

Contestants came not only from all over N. Ireland but also two archers from England had travelled to take part in the event.

Lough Cuan, the host club for this year’s Championships, is an archery club meeting in the Newtownards area will also host the All British Field Archery Championships in May 2008. The course organisers would like to thank all those who helped to ensure that the N.I. Championships ran so smoothly no matter how small was their contribution. It was good practice for the major UK event for next year.

The club’s coaches are also helping to start a Disabled Club in Newtownards, there being no reason why everyone should not enjoy archery. A full report on this venture will be available in due course. A series of beginners classes are planned for April/May at Newtownards for those wanting to learn to shoot. At last! A warm(ish) day. Overcast for most of the time with a gentle breeze, dry underfoot. The course at Gortnamoyagh had a few surprises such as target 7 where the stream had cut a small but deep valley against whish the butt was set. Any overshoot meant a very long trek back down the road, through the farm then back through the fields. Then back. Also an extra novelty target had been introduced – a now redundant Assembly electioneering poster for one Philippe Moison standing for the Green Party. Philippe did not get elected, but neither did he disgrace himself having got a sizeable number of votes. Regardless of your politics, well done Philippe!

A beautiful, sunny day with spring flowers beginning to carpet the woods, especially primroses – our alternative name for this shoot. The air was still cool, but with a full 24 targets set out, including a deceptive downhill in the open which, fortunately, had a clear overshoot, no one complained. 6 NI records and 2 British records were shot for this round and 1 archer, Gilbert McClelland, has now shot the required number of scores to be awarded Master Bowman status – congratulations.

Probably the worst weather we faced this year and that accounts for the number of retired persons listed. At the start we decided that the winner would be the person with the largest and darkest blot on the score sheet. The rain lashed out of the dark and menacing clouds which raced across the sky like tormented demons driven by the high winds. The trees swayed and folks expressed doubts about survival if one of them fell. The course was very well laid out fully up to top standard. The ground was easy going underfoot except the target across the slope directly below the castle garden.

    12 X 2 FITA Unmarked

    at Ballywalter Park

by kind permission of Lord Dunleath.

The weather was dry and clear after a hard nights frost. There was no wind and the sun was shining and it felt good to be alive on such a wonderful day.   The Manor House looked stunning in the morning sunlight a reminder of the graciousness of yesteryear.   The house was built by the present owner's Great, Great, Great Grandfather between 1846 and 1850, it has now been fully restored and boasts a fine cellar of great wines.   There was a better than expected turnout of enthusiastic archers who were not disappointed by the course in such magnificent setting.

A cold day with bright sun overhead which gradually melted the ice on the road but did little to dry the mud underfoot. John Reaney shows how it is possible to put on a testing Field Shoot without much in the way of slopes using parts of the Park which have not been used before. Traditional red carnations were presented to the female competitors before starting it being the nearest Sunday shoot to St. Valentine’s Day and, inspired, there were several P/Bs shot throughout the field.
After applying our handicap to the scores the perpetual St. Valentine’s Day Plaque was awarded to Gilbert McClelland.

The weather forecast was dreadful and when I got out of bed there was a foreboding in the sky, yes, a portent of the gloom which was to come. Dark clouds were racing across the sky, and as I drove towards Gilford it began to rain. When I arrived at Gilford the weather began to pick up and it turned into a pleasant sunny day. Obviously Brendan Sr had thrust more than enough folding stuff into the offertory box and the day was excellent. It was like dropping money into the gas meter the transformation was instantaneous. The course was set by Brendan Jr, Gilbert and a couple of friends. The impression that the blue pegs were further away than the red pegs had me worried for a couple of targets then things went back to normal, ... or as near normal as one expects these days. The course was good, challenging, the ground underfoot was easy going providing you were wearing proper footwear.

Mild day, dry am but with increasingly heavy rain after lunch which made it slippery underfoot John Reaney had found yet more new shots which, with the moving of pegs during lunch, made for a testing & enjoyable shoot. Just when you thought it was safe to go out in the forest………Included a steep downhlll Multiple almost under your feet!

    BANBRIDGE ARCHERY CLUB
Results of BAC’s 2006 Festive Shoot as follows:
Banbridge Archery Club would like to thank all the archers who supported this now very popular festive
shoot and those who donated prizes for the raffle.
It was nice to see a good turnout of junior archers, many of whom travelled from Limavady.
The amount raised on the day for local charities was just over £300.00.
    Regards, Brendan.
