This is someones account of the proceedings of the Annual General Meeting held at the Rugby Club on the 7th September 2006 at 7.30pm. and should not be taken as the definitive version as it must be ratified by the club membership, signed by the Chairman and countersigned by the secretary
James Sterling in the chair.

Apologies for absence. John Kenny, Aine Kerrin, Claire Kerrin, Andrew Kerrin
The Chairman welcomed all members present to this AGM. The minutes of the previous AGM and an EGM had previously been circulated. With this amendment the minutes were passed by general assent.
Chairmans Address.. This was read out by James Stering.
Treasurers Report. by Malachy Kerrin
Proposals rising from the Treasurer’s Report.;
That the Club will pay the Leisure Centre for the use of their hall for our winter session in advance. This would enable the Club to receive a discount on the total cost. Proposed by Adrian Hanna, seconded Linda Douglas. Passed by general assent

That there be an increase in membership fees from £60 to ,£62 per adult and from £30 to £31 per junior. This reflected the increase in the affiliation fee to NIAS. Proposed Noel Tennyson, seconded John Kenny. Passed by general assent.

In response to a query from Bill James the portion of the fee for Membership that went directly to the Club per adult was £9 - £30 for affiliation to GNAS, £17 for affiliation to NIAS, £6 for affiliation to Ards Rugby Club with a proportionate £5 from Juniors

That the target fee remain at £3.00 per evening. Proposed Walter Roberts, seconded Alvin Hillocks. Passed by general assent.

Auditors Report. George Piggott reported he was satisfied with the accounts. His report was available to anyone in the Club on request.

Secretary. Arthur Halligey was proposed by John Reaney, seconded by Noel Tennyson. There being no further nominations Arthur Halligey was re-elected to serve as Secretary for the coming year.
Tournament Officer. John Kenny had indicated to the meeting that he would not be actively seeking nomination as Tournament Officer. John Reaney was proposed by Noel Tennyson, seconded by Aud Needham. John Kenny was proposed by Graham McIlwrath, seconded by John Fairfield.. Neil Gordon asked if there was a possibility of the two candidates working together. John Reaney replied that, if elected, he would welcome help as the T.O. was not just responsible for course laying and organising events but also was responsible for Health and Safety. Noel Tennyson said that on the day of a shoot one person must assume the responsibility. Neil Gordon proposed a joint tenancy of this Office, seconded by Noel Tennyson. It was pointed out that John Kenny had left instruction that he would only accept nomination for this Office if no one else were to be proposed in which case he would willingly stand to one side. Noel Tennyson withdrew his proposal. It was deemed that John Kenny had declined the nomination. There being no further nominations John Reaney was elected to serve as Tournament Officer for the coming year.
Members Representative. Noel Tennyson was proposed by John reaney, seconded by Alvin Hillocks. There being no further proposals Noel Tennyson was elected to serve as Members representative for the coming year.
Child Protection Officer. Aud Needham was proposed by Hugh Graham. Aud Needham declined the nomination. Aud Needham proposed Neil Gordon, seconded by Barbara Reaney.

Neil indicated his willingness to stand and serve for 3 years (the period of a Certificate of Approval from the PSNI). John Reaney proposed that Ann Orr be elected as a second CPO in case the few girls in the club were unwilling to approach a man, seconded by Linda Douglas. Mal Kerrin proposed that the club elect two CPOs, seconded Adrian Hanna and passed by general assent.
The nomination of Neil Gordon was passed by general assent.
The nomination of Ann Orr was passed by general assent.
Neil Gordon and Ann Orr were elected to serve as Child Protection Officers for the coming year. Aud Needham was asked and agreed to continue to fill the post until both elected Officers had received their Certificates from the PSNI.

LCB British Champions
Neill Gordon Compound Barebow. Andy Haggan Gents Longbow. Audrey Needham Ladies Longbow.

Lough Cuan Bowmen have been asked to host the 2008 ALL BRITISH & OPEN FIELD ARCHERY CHAMPIONSHIPS which is a great honour for the club. It should be noted that Lough Cuan hosted the All British on the first occasion that it came to Ireland.
We have two fantastic possible locations for this event Garron Point, and Ballywalter Park, both offer such magical resources that it is impossible for me to choose between them, anyway thats up to the club members to decide. Garron Point has spectacular views (supberb hill shots) and marvelous on site facilities. Ballywalter flat, sheltered and heavily wooded (not as hilly) is bang in the middle of a holiday resort. A plant hunters paradise.
Keep watching this space for updates.

A LETTER FROM ARTHUR
Dear Fellow Club Member
At the EGM held in the Rugby Club 31st May it was announced that Lough Cuan Bowmen have been offered the opportunity to host the ABOFC 2008.
This is a prestigious event and we want to present it in a professional manner. Everyone in the Club has talents which can help to ensure that LCB can cope with and present an event which will be successful and leave our visitors wanting to come again.
To ensure continuity and bring all this about George Pigott was elected as Tournament Organiser, John Kenny as Course Organiser, Arthur Halligey as Course Secretary and Mal Kerrin as Fund Manager.
Others will be co-opted as and when necessary. A plan of action will be formulated in the coming months to clarify what is needed. If any one has any ideas, no matter how trivial please let one of the Committee know. George’s e-mail is GeorgeJPigott@aol.com while the others are ahalligey@btinternet.com, johnthescribe@tesco.net and malkerrin@hotmail.com . We would rather receive 29 ideas which are unworkable than not receive the one that is a cracker,
May all your arrows fly true
Arthur

2005/2006 ARCHERY SEASON
Club members. Training on Wednesday Nights at 7pm at Newtownards Rugby Club nights, the first hour is for beginners. If they they have their own equipment they will be permitted to shoot with the adults providing they have achieved the necessary standard.
Newtownards Rugby Club, Lansdown Road. This is close to Newtownards on the Comber Newtownards Road. Be there early, to introduce yourself and make yourself familiar with the members. Membership, affiliation and "tryout" fees are very low but variable each year, anyway it's a heck of a sight cheaper than golf. The Club is Field Archery oriented but we are happy to share our facilities with the Target Archer Fraternity on a 50/50 equal basis.

The classes of bow used range from the primitive but deadly longbow to the modern highly complicated Compound bow. Just come along and see the various types in operation before making your mind up which class you would like to shoot in.

This is another outstanding result for Ireland, Comber, Newtownards and Lough Cuan Bowmen in particular. Those who took 1st places in this World Class Event are to be congratulated. Indeed everyone on this list is to be congratulated. Lough Cuan is without doubt the finest Archery Club to be found anywhere. Once we get our medals then we should sing and dance in the streets. Just look at what we have achieved in the last six months and we have lots more to come.

We also have two current British (GNAS) Field Champions (2002 Dearne Valley) within the membership of Lough Cuan:-

Gentleman CBB Adrian Hanna Lough Cuan 267 287 554 1st

The Irish Team drawn from the membership of The Irish Field Archery Federation (IFAF) achieved what is without question one of the greatest sporting achievements that Ireland has ever made in any sporting event. (With the possible exception of us stuffing the West Indies at Cricket. )We are naturally proud that the team members from Lough Cuan Bowmen played such a major part. There were other World and European awards taken by the IFAF members of other Irish Clubs as can be seen on the News Page.

In the past Field Archers have made every effort to prevent spectators from attending tournaments and shy away from publicity. Since this superb achievement we have decided to publish the results of tournaments and begin to recruit new members. However we will not actively seek and will discourage spectators at tournaments for safety reasons. If you are interested in Archery read below how to contact us.

Lough Cuan Bowmen are affiliated to the Grand National Archery Society (GNAS) and a high proportion of the membership are also affiliated to the Irish Field Archery Federation (IFAF) which is part of the International Field Archery Association (IFAA). This gives us the opportunity to represent Ulster, Ireland and/or Great Britain in any Field Archery events we desire to enter.

Lough Cuan... the most ancient name of Strangford Lough. The Vikings called it "Sträng Fjõrd" (Strong Fjord) indicating fast flowing tidal waters which can run at up to 20 Kmph in the narrows. This eventually became Strangford. (as in crossing place) We have taken the liberty of calling ourselves Lough Cuan Bowmen to reflect the ancient past when men defended and fed themselves with the Bow and Arrow. The old Club Badge reflects the Viking history, the magnificent wildlife, abundant flora and Archery together with a nasty accident which happened to Mr O'Neill's hand.
For those seriously interested in the history of the region there are two excellent books which are currently available:-
1... A Taste of Old Comber by Len Ball and Desmond Rainey ISBN 1 870132 06 8.
2... Strangford Lough, an archaelogical survey of the maratime cultural landscape ISBN 0 85640 723 2.

MISSION STATEMENT

The legend of the two swans on Lough Cuan's Logo.
THE DEATH OF DERBFORGAILL
Derbforgaill, daughter of the king of Lochlann, (Norway) fell in love with Cú Chulainn without seeing him, because of the stories she had heard about him. So she and a handmaid of hers took the form of swans and flew to Loch Cuan with a golden chain between them to seek her beloved. Lugaid (of the Red Stripes) saw the birds flying overhead and challenged Cú Chulainn to have a shot at them. He shot a stone from his slingshot at them, which went through Derbforgaill's ribs and penetrated her womb. Suddenly there were two human forms there on the shore.
That's all that decency permits me to reveal if you want the rest find out for yourself.

2001 Northern Ireland Hosted the British Field Championships on Sat/Sun 26th and 27th May 2001. This was the first time ever that this event was hosted in Northern Ireland and Lough Cuan Bowmen acted as hosts. I believe that we put on a very fine tournament, and to do so at such short notice was magical. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped Lough Cuan in hosting this major tournament. You all helped in one way or another to make it the success that it was.
Adrian.
It should be noted that the Northern Ireland took the Team Prize in this event and shared the Prize with England in the 1992 event, as a result the event will be coming back to Northern Ireland in 2004.

It is worthy of noting that Tanya Blamphin won the British Ladies Traditional Section in 2001 she was 5 months pregnant at the time. She also won the Northern Irish Ladies Traditional title in 2001 & again in 2003.
